In this project, the Wall is a tool which generates an urban fabric in which the boundaries between units blur and the identity of the individual house is subsumed to the identity of the architecture of the communal whole. The spaces on this site, both public and private, are defined by the twisting of a single continuous wall. Urban infrastructure is housed within the boundary wall delimiting the public realm: lighting, benches, and fountains are carved into the walls of the streets and plazas. The walls facing private gardens likewise contain alcoves and niches which house domestic infrastructure: planters, daybeds, and lanterns. Thus, rather than merely serving as devices of separation, the wall becomes an active space of occupation and inhabitation – a “living” wall.
