The sea of sand turns the desert into a territory without a ground. Constantly shifting, the ground is never a point of reference; like sailors, the inhabitants of the desert rely on the constellations as the only stable geographic guides. Suspended between this shifting ground and the infinite sky, the floating volume of the Dakhla Museum traces the histories and cultures of the peoples of the desert. In this extreme climate, the hovering volume shelters a shaded public plaza and garden, upon which the museum’s public entities are located. The path to the museum circles around the temporary exhibition space which floats between the public plaza and the museum proper. Inside the museum, the experience is fabricated like a constellation, a non-linear experience which groups and re-groups objects into multiple narratives.

Sur un site stratégiquement placé, entre mer et centre urbain, le musée a été conçu pour être le premier espace public de la ville. Entourée par deux strates d’espaces déambulatoires, la structure blanche et suspendue invite l’espace public dans l’espace commun. Le paysage accompagne le regard et tisse une continuité jusqu’au bout de l’îlot. Le musée est traversé jusqu’à sa toiture, qui est rendue accessible, faisant du bâtiment une expérience de circulation entre sol et ciel. Un perpétuel mouvement qui, à la manière des cultures du sud, est en mobilité constante. L’espace muséal est libre, transparent, ponctué de généreuses ouvertures zénithales inondant de lumière les plateaux d’exposition élevés à différents niveaux. Les étages s’ouvrent sur la mer, rythmant le contenu, tandis que le sol ancre le programme dans la ville et ses espaces publics.
